FORMAT FOR ALL WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS:

All assignments are preferred to be in MS Word, double spaced in 12 or 14 point font, nothing too exotic. Make it businesslike. Keep margins as though you were turning it in on paper, so there should be an inch at the top and sides. Place your name at the top right corner, and below that the name of the assignment, such as Essay 1. If you use a Mac or do not have MS Word, you will need to save it rich text format. You must know how to send your work as an attachment; never simply write an assignment in your e-mail program.

*** ALWAYS keep a copy of the e-mail containing written assignments and important questions you ask me. If your e-mail program does not automatically send you a copy to your "sent" folder, simply "cc" or copy yourself on all transmissions and keep this message until the final grades have been issued. In this way, you have proof that each assignment was sent on time in the event that an assignment does not reach me and can be re-sent showing it was sent on time. This protects YOU, so I highly urge you to do this.

Every teacher has certain wording rules, and I want to let you know up front what mine are for essays. CLICK HERE for MERI'S NO-NOs.

For additional help in writing papers, use your reference text, Writing Paragraphs and Essays. I will refer to it when I grade your papers, so keep it handy. I occasionally depart from Mrs. Fry's rules, so always ask if you are unsure, but use her book as a guideline. If you have problems, such as sentence errors and grammar problems, that our tutoring center can help with, I will refer you to them. See home page for the link to C-Tools.

EXAMPLES OF AUDIENCE PARAGRAPHS:

Eva De La Rosa

As an individual who postponed finishing her education until later in life, I have faced many challenges in finding the courses necessary to complete my degree. Coastline Community College opens new doors of opportunity for countless non-traditional students, like myself. Deciding to go back to college after an absence of twenty-six years poses many challenges, including the limitations of living in an area with limited educational options, the San Luis Obispo County, and juggling a full-time job. After completing an AA in Family Studies/Human Services at Cuesta Community College this past May, I began to attend California Baptist University's accelerated degree program to pursue a Bachelors degree in Behavioral Science with a concentration in Social Work. Upon beginning the program, I discovered I needed three additional lower division classes, which I was unable to fit into my schedule due to work and the classes I commute to San Bernardino to take weekly. Coastline Community College's distance learning opportunities offer a fantastic opportunity to complete those classes from my home at times that fit into my busy lifestyle. The flexibility and variety of classes make it possible for me and many other working adults to complete a college education. When I visited the campus in Fountain Valley, I found the personnel to be very helpful and sincerely interested in assisting me to reach my goals. Enrolling at Coastline for two internet based classes is enabling me to fulfill my goal of completing my Bachelor's degree next May and graduating from college before my thirty year high school reunion. It is a wonderful benefit to students who do not fit the typical college mold, to have an innovative institution such as Coastline where there are so many options to choose from to prepare for a chosen field.

Paragraph 2. Minister

With the busy and demanding job of being in the ministry, you might want to seriously consider the opportunities available through Coastline Community College. The challenge of finding time to take classes for personal growth and development may have keep you from enrolling to this point. However with the innovative educational opportunities offered by Coastline Community College, you can take those classes you have wanted to for so long. You can take evening classes or enroll in Weekend College where you take classes on Friday evening and all day Saturday. This format is great if you would like to earn an AA in another field to supplement your ministry income, without taking time away from your congregation during the week and on Sunday. Even better suited to your demanding schedule may be Coastline's distance learning opportunities. You could expand your horizons through the variety of classes offered by Cablecast or Internet.  Have you wanted to better understand your aging congregation? Sign up for Introduction to Gerontology through Cablecast and develop a better understanding of the aging process in order to minister more effectively to this growing segment of your church body. Do something just for yourself and take a class in a language you've always wanted to learn, you never know you may get an opportunity to be involved in a leading a group of your church members on a short-term mission to China or Russia. Coastline has evening classes in both languages as well as others. Coastline has options to fit your busy life and you will be enriched as you pursue your goal of lifelong learning.

Coastline Community College has a diverse array of programs for students of any age.  Any student can obtain an exceptional education, but for those of us who cannot attend school in the standard setting, Coastline is ideal.  The school offers degree programs through traditional classroom settings, time-tested telecourses, and the new medium the world now knows as the internet. Additionally, the school offers STAR, which is an accelerated degree program for those who wish to get the “college experience” over as quickly as possible.; In this fast paced world, the convenience this school offers to those students, such as myself, who do not have the time to devote to being in a classroom is beyond imagination.  I chose Coastline for two reasons:  I needed a school that (1) would allow me the time to obtain my AA while attending another school's certificate program, and (2) didn't require me to rearrange my work schedule to fit with the times of classes.  I never have to set foot inside a classroom at Coastline except for a mid-term and final.  I have a long road ahead of me before I achieve my educational goals.  Therefore, Coastline has the quality of education I need, along with the diversity in programs to fit my schedule.  I have no doubt that I made the right choice in choosing to attend Coastline.

The 15 year-old

You will not believe what I have found.  I have located the best school, in the best city, with the best weather, and the hottest chicks!  Coastline Community College is in Fountain Valley, just a short drive from LA, and an even shorter drive to the beach.  Just think about everything the beach has to offer.  There are beautiful women everywhere.  On top of that, you can obtain a top notch education at a school with a great reputation.  Now, this school isn't just any ordinary school.  Coastline offers programs to get you through school quickly, or programs that don't require class attendance.  Have you ever heard of such a thing?  I couldn't believe it when I heard it.  All my classes are either on TV or the internet.  Man, this can't get any better.  To top it off, I have never experienced weather like this in my life.  They say it only rains here three months out of the year, and that it's not even that bad.  This place is rad!  Come check it out.  I live off-campus in this killer apartment with the dopest dudes.  We can party all night and I can show you how perfect this school is.  After you see this place, I bet a few years from now you'll be applying for admission. We're gonna party hard, man!

To me, Coastline Community College means having options.  Although Southern California boasts many options available for higher education, I eliminated the traditional four-year universities for reasons of cost and lack of convenience.  There are also private schools with programs geared for working adults, but these, too, I rejected because of their prohibitive cost.  This left me with several local community colleges to choose from.  All of the community colleges offer courses at the reasonable price of only $11.00 per unit, and there are a number conveniently located near my home.  Coastline College was the clear winner, however, because of the wide range of options it offers.  Coastline's Distance Learning department is doing a phenomenal job of making higher education more accessible, especially for the non-traditional student.  There is a vast array of telecourses and internet classes available to fit any schedule.  Coastline offers courses at eight satellite campuses around Orange County, again attesting to a philosophy of offering convenience and accessibility.  Coastline College is conveniently located, inexpensive, and most importantly, Coastline Community College means I have more options as I work toward my goal of obtaining my degree.

The Clergy Member:

I think you would really enjoy visiting a Coastline Community College campus.  I'm sure you realize how much technology has changed the face of higher education since the days when you attended college and seminary.  Coastline College makes excellent use of technology, with state-of-the-art computer labs and technical courses.  In addition to traditional classroom courses, there are courses available on the internet and via television (called “telecourses”), enabling older students like me to continue their education even while working full-time.  However, Coastline does not allow technology to overshadow the human side of education.  I have been very impressed with the caliber of the instructors and with their level of commitment and concern for their students.  Coastline is unique in that there are eight smaller area campuses, making their courses more convenient and accessible, and giving the college a close relationship with the community.  The non-traditional approach of the school has made it possible for me to work on my goal of completing my degree without having to disrupt our family life by attending classes away from home several evenings a week.  I think you will agree with me that Coastline Community College is the perfect solution for someone, young or old, looking for a local college that will offer many options.

Coastline Community College (CCC) is at the forefront of education in Southern California.  CCC offers a solid education which meets the needs of a diverse community.  The innovative techniques used to educate the student are awesome.  For instance, I enrolled at CCC for its Internet courses, convenience, and an A.A. degree.  The college uses the Internet to the advantage of the student.  I am a perfect example of this.  I live a long distance from the CCC campus, so the Internet is one of the few options available to meet my educational goals.  In fact, the final determination to attend CCC was for its diverse methods of educating students.  With the application of Internet and independent study courses, I will finally be able to continue my education.  With a full time job, a wife, and children, I could not participate in a traditional classroom setting.  The convenience of being able to study, access class information, and complete assignments on the computer is a boon for me.  I am ecstatic that this college will give me the opportunity to increase my knowledge, improve my computer skills, and obtain my A.A. degree.  In addition, CCC offers courses in which I can apply towards a future bachelor's degree.  I made the correct decision to enroll at CCC.

II. The five year-old

Let's go on an adventure together.  I want to visit my school.  Come and join me.  My school is called Coastline Community College.  Guess what?  I have never been to my school.  I have only attended my school through the computer.  My school will be new to the both of us. That is why this will be a grand adventure for both you and me.  We can walk around the whole school and pretend we are exploring a far off planet.  It will be fun.  We will meet many new people.    We can meet all of my teachers.  We can go to the biology lab and look at a frog or maybe even see a skeleton.  I've also heard that there is a large grassy field we can play on.  We can even eat some goodies from the vending machines.  Then, we can go to the library and see all the books and maybe watch a video.  While we are in the library we can use a computer.  We can use the computer's search button to find the school you attend.  When you return to your school, you can tell all of your classmates that you visited your school on a computer!  Wouldn't that be neat?
